NICOSIA: AS SEEN BY OTHERS, Still the only divided city in Europe

With a visual arts viewing, art beyond politics functions as a means by which a strong deposit is built, the result of an intercultural exploration and recording through the mapping of the still divided city of Nicosia. The buffer zone/green line serves as a platform for a short but content-rich art journey in order to redefine its pragmatic as well as its symbolic existence.
The proposed workshop offers participants the opportunity to experience and thus to discover, through an experiential engagement, the capital of Cyprus as the last divided city of Europe. They are then asked to imprint, through an artifacts collection, a personal collage based on the theme Urban Collage: with(in) and with(out) the green line.

Creative procedure
Participants are invited to work on a personal level or in small groups, on a daily and intensive basis based on the structure of the proposed program. Mapping the routes that concern them within the Nicosia Walls and through exploratory walks, they will develop a personal methodology of recording and plotting ideas, thoughts, images and texts that will now be characterized as visual artefacts.
Visual artefacts, combined with parallel historical and geographic research, and with an individual way of expression, will create a personal synthetic collage. Excerpts, notes, interviews, photographs, videos, and any other possible "evidence" surrounding the enclosed area of the inner city walls, targeted to the buffer zone/green line, will be the content of a particular and fascinating creative process in a defined space-time context. The different background, individuality and personality of each workshop participant and their interaction during the procedure may lead to unexpected results.
At the end of the workshop, at the last meeting, each participant will submit an excerpt from his/her work to create a new collaborative work. The digital, collective collage NICOSIA: AS SEEN BY OTHERS, STILL THE ONLY DIVIDED CITY IN EUROPE will be based on the proposed theme Urban Collage: with (in) and with (out) the green line and is going to be posted on the internet as informative and educational material through an online platform.
